I am a 32 year old sixth grade
teacher at Sarah Winnemucca Elementary School in
Northwest Reno. I am the Democratic candidate
for the 2nd Congressional District in Nevada.
I am a single mother of three beautiful children,
Kelton 10, Kennedy 7 and O'Keeffe 5.
I grew up in Sacramento and Reno.
I attended Reno High School 1981 - 1984, where I was
on the State Champion Softball Team. I was
selected as the MVP of Nevada in 1984. I graduated
from Rio Americano High School in Sacramento in 1985
and accepted a full softball scholarship to the
University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
I became active with several
campus organizations including the Racial Awareness
Task Force Committee. I was a consultant to
the Black Student union. We brought in
speakers like Reverend Bevel and Jesse Jackson.
After graduation, I took my first teaching position
in the inner city school system in Compton, CA.
This is when my "real" education began.
The following year I was the owner/operator of a
pre-school in Albuquerque where the curriculum was
based on multiculturalism environment. We were
able to attract a diverse clientele. After
three years, I moved to Nevada to care for my ill
father. After his death, I began teaching
within the Reno school systems. In the past
few years I have been recognized for several
achievements.
For me it's not about the awards - it's about the
kids whose lives I touch. It's about preparing them
for a world that has unlimited opportunities for
each of them. I try to instill within each of
them that any thing is possible if they are willing
to commit to it and work hard to achieve it.
It is with these children's interest I have stepped
forward to challenge Jim Gibbons in the 2000
Congressional Race. I want every child to
believe that any one of us can and should
participate in our government. We do not have
to be rich with money - only rich with ideas and
possibilities. We need to have a deep love for this
country and an appreciation for ALL it's diverse
citizens.
To me special interest should mean
"the interest of all citizens".
Every politician in Washington should have the best
interest of each and every citizen they represent.
That is what this country was founded on and that is
why so many have sacrificed so much.
Please take a moment to read my
views while at this site. I have written my
views not to be "politically correct" but
rather to share in honesty with you how I feel about
these issues. As a representative in Congress
my job would be to welcome all persons views and
opinions and to make decisions based on what the
majority is feeling. My grandfather use to
tell each of us "no matter what you go out in
to world to do, do it based on what you know to be
the right thing to do".
Let me know your thoughts on my
web page. I also would ask you to join me in
September to vote democratic and help me get to
Congress so I can represent your interest in our
government. My teacher's salary is no match
for Jim Gibbons massive election funds so I would
also appreciate any contributions you might be able
to spare. It does take money to get your ideas
out to the voters and I will do the best I can with
what I've got and appreciate your support.
Even if you do not feel you can support me, be sure
to exercise your right to vote....
